The challenge

Complete 96 miles in 30 days however you like – whether it’s running, walking, swimming, or your own unique way – and help us raise £95,648 before September to fund essential specialist Hospice beds. Every mile you move helps provide comfort, dignity and expert care to patients at the most vulnerable time of their lives.

Why we need our miles

After 10 years of constant use, our specialist beds and mattresses, despite regular servicing, are no longer as safe and comfortable as we want them to be. We desperately need to replace them to continue offering the first class compassionate care that every person deserves.

Elaine’s story shows just how vital specialist beds are to the care we provide. They’re not just pieces of equipment — they offer dignity, comfort, and precious moments of connection in a person’s final weeks.

How it works:

1. Register your interest:

  • Register your interest and our team will help you get started. Take part solo or as a team.

2. Track Your Miles:

  • Use our printable tracker or your favourite app (Strava, Fitbit, Apple Health).

3. Break the challenge down your way:

  • Walk, run, swim, or however you choose to get active and complete 3.2 miles a day, longer at weekends, or mix it up – whatever suits you.

4. Start Fundraising:

  • Aim to raise £96 – just £1 per mile. Share your challenge and ask your employer to match donations.

5. Earn Rewards:

  • Get digital badges, a goodie bag at 50% fundraising, and a certificate when you finish.

Miles for Mattresses FAQ's

You can register for Miles for Mattresses by completing the form on our website. If you need any help, feel free to reach out to us at events@echospice.org.uk.

  • We encourage you to start as soon as you can to support our urgent Bed Appeal. The sooner you begin, the more impact your miles and fun fundraising can make.
  • At the latest, we recommend registering before the middle of August, so you have plenty of time to complete your 96 miles by the end of September.

There’s no age limit! We want everyone to feel comfortable and safe, so if you’re under 18, we just ask that you get permission from a parent or guardian and take part with friends or family.

We’re encouraging all participants to aim for £96, which reflects the 96 miles you’re walking and the £95,648 we’re aiming to raise for our Bed Appeal. That’s just £1 per mile, and every donation counts.

You can donate the total amount online www.eastcheshirehospice.org.uk/make-a-donation, or send a cheque to:

  • East Cheshire Hospice, Millbank Drive, Macclesfield, SK10 3DR. Please include a note with your name and “Miles for Mattresses” so we know it’s from you!

Use our downloadable Miles for Mattresses tracker, or your favourite fitness app like Strava, Fitbit, or Apple Health. Share your progress on your fundraising page and socials to help boost donations!

Please allow 10–14 working days from when you hit 50% of your fundraising target. If it’s been longer, email events@echospice.org.uk and we’ll look into it.

Please always prioritise your health. If you’re injured or unwell, take a break or stop the challenge altogether – your safety comes first. Seek medical advice if needed.
