At East Cheshire Hospice, we are dedicated to placing patients and their families at the heart of everything we do. From expert medical care to meaningful moments, we’re here to make every day count — and create memories that last forever.
Elaine’s story shows just how vital specialist beds are to the care we provide. They’re not just pieces of equipment — they offer dignity, comfort, and precious moments of connection in a person’s final weeks.
When Elaine came to stay in our Inpatient Unit during her final weeks, she and her family were immediately comforted by the calm, homely environment we work so hard to create.
“Our first impressions of the hospice were that it was comfortable, calm, and didn’t feel clinical. The staff were so personable, warm, caring and couldn’t do enough for us. And the fact that we could stay over with Elaine meant the absolute world to her — and to us.” — Tina, Elaine’s sister
From the moment Elaine arrived, it was clear that being close to her family — especially her precious grandson Ned — meant everything.
Mondays had always been Elaine and Ned’s special time together — “Magical Mondays,” they called them – a time of joy, games, and imagination. So, we brought that tradition into the Hospice and helped create a new memory: “Wonderful Wednesday”. We transformed our Family Room into a hub of joy, where Elaine, Ned, and the whole family painted, decorated biscuits, and played games together.
Elaine’s specialist bed made all the difference. We were able to gently wheel her into the heart of the room, ensuring Elaine stayed comfortable while being fully part of the day. Elaine didn’t have to miss a moment — she was part of every laugh, every cuddle, every memory.
“Mum had wonderful care, and we will forever be grateful for the memories you’ve provided for her and our family.” — Sophie, Elaine’s daughter
Elaine always treasured family mealtimes, and the adjustable bed made it possible to keep sharing those special moments by being face to face with those around her, as she would be at home.
“Elaine loved us to eat with her, so on Friday evenings we’d have a ‘buffet’ dinner, gathered around her bed. The bed could be easily elevated and tilted, so she could sit up and be right there with us in the moment.” — Tina, Elaine’s sister
Another time Ned came to visit, we wheeled Elaine’s bed outside through the doors of her private room, so she and Ned could plant flowers together in the garden — just like they used to. “Elaine felt the breeze, the sunshine on her face, and the joy of being ‘Grandma’ again.”
“Elaine’s greatest joy was Ned, so to be outside with him was just wonderful.” — Tina, Elaine’s Sister
These are the moments that matter — and they’re only possible with the right equipment.
Specialist beds make a profound difference in care at the end of life. They help patients feel safe, supported, and comfortable — and help families stay close, connected, and fully present.
“It was the worst time of our lives to see Elaine paralysed and bed bound. But she stayed so positive and upbeat, and I believe the care she received — and the comfort of the bed — made that possible.” — Tina, Elaine’s sister
