Nick is a well-respected & familiar face and voice on television and radio with over 30 years’ experience in reporting and broadcasting. He presents Radio 4’s flagship ‘Today’ programme & his weekly ‘Political Thinking’ podcast. He spent a decade as the BBC’s Political Editor covering Prime Ministers Blair, Brown and Cameron. Nick’s Twitter feed is followed by around a million people. His ‘Election Notebook’ was a Sunday Times bestseller. He has made documentaries on Sir Alex Ferguson’s career, the history of the Brexit negotiation & The truth about immigration.
Nick has been a producer, programme editor, reporter and presenter on both radio and TV. He began his career working behind the camera on BBC shows ranging from ‘Newsround’ to ‘Crimewatch’. He went on to become Deputy Editor of the Sunday Lunchtime political show ‘On the Record’ and then ‘Panorama’.
Switching to appear in front of the mic, Nick became a political correspondent for the BBC in 1993 before becoming presenter of ‘Late Night Live’ on Radio 5 Live. In 1999, Nick became Chief Political Correspondent on the BBC News Channel. He left the BBC in 2002 to join ITV News, spending three years as their Political Editor
Nick returned to the BBC in 2005, as the BBC’s Political Editor and is the only person to have been Political Editor for the country’s two largest broadcasters; ITV and BBC. Nick held this position for ten years; anchoring the BBC’s Election night special programme with David Dimbleby.
Nick is the author of ‘Live From Downing Street’ (October 2012), detailing a history of the relationship between politicians and broadcasters through the decades, and ‘Election Notebook’ (June 2015) which charted not only the year leading up to the General Election, but also Nicks fight with cancer, subsequent loss of his voice and his own battle to report on the election.
Nick has a won a string of awards including Royal Television Society “Specialist Journalist of the Year”, House Magazine “Commentator of the Year’, Political Studies Association “Political Journalist of the Year” and Editorial Intelligence’s “Blogger of the Year”.
Nick lives in North London with his wife, three children and dog. He was inspired to become a broadcaster by his friend’s dad, Brian Redhead – a presenter on the ‘Today’ programme. Nick is a lifelong Manchester United fan who also enjoys sailing and theatre. He almost lost his voice after cancer surgery in Spring 2015 but has since made a good recovery.
