Susan’s Story

Susan's daughter Lucy was diagnosed with Lymphoma. She was 26 and living in London at the time, and was treated by the University College Hospital, London who were absolutely brilliant.

She had chemotherapy and various trials, which unfortunately didn’t work, the final push was stem cell replacement which worked for a short period of time.

It was then January 2017 and as a family were told that they couldn’t do anything else for Lucy. Two weeks after she moved back to Bollington from London, unfortunately, the cancer spread to her brain and she went into hospital in pain and Susan (Lucy’s mum) knew then that she was never going to come out.

After a short time, Lucy came to the Hospice and I’ll never forget the welcome that we got. Lucy and Susan arrived at the back door in an ambulance, and as they got out of the ambulance, two nurses were there to greet them both. Susan knew a couple of nurses before they went to the Hospice, they were extremely kind and supportive to Lucy, Susan and all the family, as were all the staff.

Lucy had the most beautiful room; all of the side of one wall was a window overlooking the gardens a much nicer place to be, not just for Lucy, but all her family as well. You know, it wasn’t just about the patient. Susan said “I just want people to be aware it’s not just about being there for the patient, it’s a whole community for the family and close friends as well.”

A big thing that Susan did to raise some money was the Wing Walk. Susan said “I’d been talking about this for so long since signing up to do it. I drove everybody mad with it! But it was worthwhile because I raised £2,000.
So, I’m strapped at the top of this plane. And I thought to myself, thank goodness I’m here doing it at last, I’m fed up of talking about it. I’m actually doing it now. Then I said, ‘Come on, Lucy, look, look at me!”
