Van volunteers catch up and raised a glass

Van drivers and shop assistants raised a glass to East Cheshire Hospice where they all volunteer.

The informal night out at the Park Tavern was organised by furniture co-ordinator Toni Walsh so helpers could relax and share a few stories.

Around 45 volunteers packed into the pub, all paying for their way so there was no cost to the Hospice.

Toni said: “The van drivers got together the first year and this time we invited shop volunteers and they all loved it. The pub was rammed and now we’re planning a similar outdoor event this summer.

“These volunteers give their time for the Hospice and van drivers rarely see each other because they help on different days.

“They see names in a WhatsApp group but often don’t know who they are. Volunteers all have great stories to tell.”

More than 30, some still working full time, share the van rota with an average of 20-30 volunteers at each of the Hospice’s six shops.

The Congleton outlet, which opened 15 months ago, is the main hub for furniture though all shops have storage space.

More van drivers were recruited to help collect furniture which brings in about £17,000 a month in revenue.

That figure has doubled in little over a year with the funds going directly towards patient care.

Toni said: “Furniture sales are a vital source of revenue for the Hospice. If anyone has unwanted items, please get in touch and we can collect them.” Email twalsh@echospice.org.uk or phone 07917 942273
