Grand Canyon Friends

A pair of East Cheshire friends are preparing to face their fears to support their local hospice.

Alison Newsome from Rushton Spencer and Sophie Adshead from Macclesfield are amongst the first to sign up for the East Cheshire Hospice 30th anniversary challenge at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

The friends, who both work together at the RBS bank at Chestergate, say they are least looking forward to “the bugs and the heat” and will both be challenged by a new life experience – camping.

“Even though we know it will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, we realise it will have its challenges” says 33-year-old Alison.

The Grand Canyon hike will take place in October and is the Hospices’ first overseas fundraising adventure. Alison and Sophie will be part of a larger group who will trek for four days over long distance trails, learn how to survive in the wild and even jump into 200 foot high waterfalls.

“We know its going to be tough and will require a lot of work, a lot of training and a lot of commitment but we’re up for it,” says Alison who has visited the Grand Canyon once before in 2012. “I was only there for a few hours but it was breath-taking, amazing and just unbelievable,” she says. “Im looking forward to spending much more time there in October.”

As well as the trekking, the group will spend some time in Las Vegas.

Each member of the East Cheshire team is being asked to raise sponsorship and Alison and Sophie already have a calendar of events lined up between now and their trip.

Beginning with a quiz night at Parkhouse Brewery Club in March, the pair have also lined up a Ladies Afternoon tea on Grand National Day, April 14, at the Copper Room at Charles Roe House in Macclesfield.

Training for the trip begins soon and the pair know full well the importance of getting the essentials right from the start.

“We did a charity midnight walk up Mount Snowden last August and really benefitted from some of the prep training we did beforehand in Macclesfield forest,” says Alison.
