Prestbury Golf Charity Day

Golfers rallied round to make the East Cheshire Hospice Charity Golf Day a resounding success despite a rain delay.

Bad weather forced organisers to cancel the annual team event at Prestbury GC, re-arranging the competition for three weeks later.

The switch did not dampen the spirits of supporters who raised a record £9,035 for the charity.

The fourball betterball event was organised by John Davies, Director of Mactex Properties Ltd, and former golf professional Nigel Preston.

John was involved in the first tournament run by Hospice fundraiser Margaret Broughton in 1984 and revived the event three years ago after a short break.

The winners from 21 teams were Allport Electrical Ltd, led by Director Ryan Allport and team-mates
Tony Murtagh, Mike Hearson and Chris Percy, with a score of 90 points.

Matt Beresford and Amanda Cross, from Sphere UK Print, helped with fundraising, along with Amanda Soane and Sarah Hancock, from Thorneycroft Solicitors. Steve Mobley provided framed pictures of players.

John said: "We had to cancel the event initially because it was such a terrible day. The new date clashed with holidays but thankfully there was a wonderful response from companies and individuals who made it such a success.

"Sphere UK generously helped out with printing and I'd like to thank everyone who  contributed in so many ways, including Prestbury Golf Club for their kind hospitality." Next year's tournament is on Thursday, June 7.
