Barn Bash Birds plan ahead

December may not exactly be the month for thinking about dancing in barns, but that’s exactly what six Macclesfield friends are doing.

The six pals, known collectively as the Barn Bash Birds, are hoping the season of goodwill will spur on some local businesses to come forward as early sponsors for another fundraising event for the East Cheshire Hospice.

This week the group presented an astonishing £18,330 cheque to the Hospice, three months after organising their first ever charity barn dance at Symondley Farm in Sutton. Now they’re looking to gauge interest in another event for 2017.

“We’ve never done anything like this before and we thought our target of £7,500, which would pay for the Hospice services for one day, was high enough” says one of the groups, Katie Hankinson.

“We never thought for a second that we’d get so much support from businesses, groups and friends and now we’re hoping to create a mailing list to assess interest in future events” she says.

The six friends - Katie Hankinson, Jennie Pardon, Vic Jackson, Kerry Ward, Sarah Dale and Emma Dixon – wanted to raise the money for the care and love from the Hospice of their loved ones and spent six months of hard work clearing and cleaning out the barn and installing lighting and sound for the event. And with Emma and Sarah also working at the Hospice, the group knew the importance of every penny raised.

“Sponsorship support helped us to ensure as much money as possible went to the hospice and, with 300 tickets selling out within two hours, we knew we’d done something right,” says Katie.

“We’ll re-group in the New Year to decide on any future events and we’d be really interested to hear from any businesses or individuals who might be interested in sponsoring an event”.
