Canoe Against Cancer – Canoe Brothers

Tom and George Bentham have set themselves an EPIC challenge to canoe across the country to raise money for the Hospice in memory of their dad this September! Read about their journey and story below, and consider donating via their JustGiving page.

The Journey
Our coast-to-coast fundraising journey begins at Glasson Dock, near Lancaster, where our late father Mark learned to sail as a boy and developed his sense of adventure. From there we will paddle towards the outskirts of Liverpool before taking in Manchester, Huddersfield, Wakefield and finally out into the Humber.
A total of 19 moveable bridges, 37 small aqueducts or under bridges, and four tunnels are involved in the 184-mile epic voyage. Our aim is to complete the journey in less than 9 days!

Oh, did we mention we are complete novices and never been in a canoe before this challenge?!

Follow our every paddle via Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. You can also read about our full story on our JustGiving page:

Our Story
Let us introduce our Dad, Mark Bentham. Another individual story in the battle against cancer. A fresh food chef by trade who travelled the world with his passion for flavour and love of cooking.
He sought out new dishes with adventures in Canada, North and South America, trips around Australia & India. After years of exploration he came up with his own mantra “There are two things that are certain in life, 1. One day we will all die. 2. You have to eat!”

To our dad, food was everything. More than a passion, he loved cooking for all. Sitting down to talk and laugh at any makeshift camp table or solid oak masterpiece. Therefore, his form of cancer was one of the cruellest. An aggressive throat cancer that quickly spread to his stomach, stopping his ability to eat. Despite surgery, Mark’s cancer eventually become terminal and we entered his darkest and hardest times. As all hope faded and reality struck home, the actuality of what was to come kept looming.

That’s when East Cheshire Hospice stepped in. Not only taking care of all of Mark’s needs but wrapping around the family like a security blanket, supporting with both the physical needs, but more importantly the mental battles for all touched by cancer, not only during but long after and into the future. Sadly, this story will sound all too familiar to many whose lives have also been affected by cancer. That’s why we are making a stand against cancer, to support this amazing charity by setting a challenge Mark would approve of. If you would like to help us reach our target of raising £7,500.00 – the amount it costs to run the Hospice for one day, please consider donating. Thank you!
