Sunflower Centre Open Day

The doors of East Cheshire Hospice will be wide open next month for members of the public to learn more about the hospice services.

A “drop-in” day will feature information about the full range of services on offer at the Hospice that support patients, families and carers.

“The open day is a way of people finding out more about what we do,” says Sunflower Centre Sister Helen Henshaw.

“Our services have increased substantially since I started working here 19 years ago due partially to the fact that people are living longer but also because over the years the stigma and barriers to our work have broken down meaning more and more people are accessing our services,” she says.

The Sunflower Centre, which opened in May 2011, has its own separate entrance at the East Cheshire Hospice and is open five days a week offering a range of different types of services and support, all free of charge.

One of the most popular services is the ever-expanding dementia care offer for both people who live with dementia and their carers. Services such as the Companion Service, where trained volunteers spend time with those living with dementia, are becoming increasingly popular.

“And our first Singing Together session , which took place earlier this month, is a great example of how some of our non-medical activities can really help,” says Helen. “People were a little quiet at first but within 10 minutes everyone was singing and dancing and having a great time.”

The Centre also runs a Living Well programme to support people from diagnosis of a life limiting illness, through treatments, and ongoing support. And also on offer are a range of outpatient services including complementary therapies, such as Indian head massage and Reiki plus physiotherapy and occupational therapy services, psychological support , and lymphoedema management services.

And there’s even practical sessions offering guidance on financial and legal situations for families.

Also available on the day will be information on a range of vacancies currently being advertised and information about the host of fundraising events planned for the Hospice in its 30th anniversary year.

The Centre will be open between 10am and 2pm on Friday April 13 for the “drop-in” day. To find out more call 01625 665685 .
