Leavig Legacies

Helping the next patients at East Cheshire Hospice by leaving a legacy is a key message being sent out by the charity on the eve of its Will Week.

Legacies are so important to the Hospice making up a third of its income.

The Hospice stresses the value of such bequests all year round but particularly during Will Week (Oct 1-5) when law firms waive usual fees for writing, or updating an existing Will, in return for a donation to the Hospice.

Rachel Allcock, Income Generation Director at the Hospice, said: "We've received thousands of kind donations during three decades of providing care for our community.

"As we celebrate the Hospice's 30th anniversary and look to the future, it's perhaps timely to stress the importance of gifts from Wills, also known as legacies.

"Every single legacy, no matter how big or small, is very much appreciated and makes a real difference.

"Our end of life care is available to anyone over 18, irrespective of their diagnosis, which means a gift in your Will today could end up supporting your own loved ones in the future.

"Even 1% of an estate would help us to continue providing our very special, high quality services free of charge to local people in future years."

The Hospice treats around 750 patients a year, a number boosted in the last year since its Hospice @Home service began.

Rachel added: "Some 80 per cent of our income comes from donations, including legacies, which shows just how much we rely on the goodwill of the community."

"By leaving East Cheshire Hospice a fixed amount, or a percentage of an estate in a Will, people can make a huge difference to the lives of those in our community facing their most precious days."

The largest legacy the charity received was £1.1m in 2008, providing the funding for an extension and modernisation of the Inpatient area at its Millbank Drive site.

It created seven single en-suite rooms, a bespoke admissions area, plus refurbishment of the two remaining four-bedded wards.

Other legacies have helped fund a staff nurse's salary, complementary therapies and meals for inpatients. The smallest legacy was £25.
