Why leave us a legacy?

Leaving the hospice a legacy (a gift in your Will) helps ensure that we will be here in the future for those who need us.

Nearly 200 donations amounting to over £11,500 have now been received from Wills written during our Will Week. We are very grateful to anyone who took part in Will Week and made a donation as well as to all 26 solicitors’ offices for supporting the scheme. During Will Week no charge was made by these local firms to write standard Wills.

Additionally, the hospice will also benefit further in the future from those people who had the foresight to include the hospice in their Will. This type of revenue is invaluable and without it the hospice would truly struggle.

Will Week will be taking place again in April next year.

By making a gift to the hospice in your Will you are supporting us in the future should it not be an option at present. These donations make a huge difference and help us plan for the hospice’s future.

As we receive around 20% of our running costs in this way, it means that provision of care for one in five of our patients is dependent on legacies.

The hospice receives legacies of all sizes. A significant legacy received in 2005 helped us undertake the wonderful improvements in our In-patient unit.

Other legacies help ensure we can continue to provide many of our essential services.
A recent gift in a Will has helped us to plan the refurbishment of our chapel.

HOW TO LEAVE A LEGACY

You can leave a legacy to East Cheshire Hospice in your Will. Everyone should have a Will and it is advisable to update it every four or five years to reflect any changes in circumstances. To include a gift in your Will to the hospice, if it has been written fairly recently, a codicil can be added which is simple and relatively inexpensive – a solicitor can help with this.

Once you have left any gifts to family and friends, you may wish to remember the hospice in your Will. As a registered charity, any gift you leave to the hospice will be free from Inheritance Tax so the full amount will be received by the hospice.

For more detailed information on how to include a legacy gift in your Will, please see the practical factsheets we have prepared to help you (click on tab). We would then recommend that you speak to your solicitor about your Will. A number of local solicitors support the hospice and these can be found by visiting the Will Week Supporting Solicitors or on our Corporate Supporters page.

WHY WRITE A WILL?

  • Making a Will, and keeping it updated, ensures that your assets go where you would want. Dying intestate (without a Will) can make it complicated for those you leave behind at what is often a distressing time
  • Gifts to UK registered charities, like East Cheshire Hospice, are free of Inheritance Tax. This means that the full amount you intend to leave to your chosen charity is received by the charity, rather than 40% going to the Government.
  • Leaving charitable gifts in your Will can reduce the Inheritance Tax payable by your estate.
Please see below for a list of solicitors that supported the hospice Will Week.  These solicitors would be happy to help you with writing or amending your Will.

Should you wish to remember the hospice in your Will, please make sure to include our full name (East Cheshire Hospice) and our registered charity number (515104). Thank you.

WHY UPDATE YOUR WILL?

  • Reviewing and updating your Will is advisable to reflect any changes in your circumstances. Remember that on marriage or divorce, it is essential that you update your Will. Any Will that you made prior to your marriage is automatically revoked when you get married, unless it has been specifically made in contemplation of that marriage.
  • Updating your Will does not need to be a complicated process. If only minor changes are required you can add a simple statement, called a codicil, to your current Will which is a relatively inexpensive process.
  • If you do need to write or update a Will, why not talk to a solicitor who would be happy to advise you.
